“Miroku, it’s headed your way!” Sango hollered out from her position astride Kirara as the fully transformed cat demon circled the valley overhead, looking for an opening of attack.
The enormous spider youkai roared, sending birds to flight from the trees the spider was pushing over with its massive legs. Shifting his footing, Miroku readied himself as he unwound his prayer beads from off his wrist.
“Jewel shard!” Kagome yelled out from her vantage point on a ledge looking out over the valley.
“Keh, explains the size,” Inuyasha snorted, unsheathed the Tetsusaiga and hefted it up onto his shoulder, his full attention leveled on the jewel enhanced youkai. “Where’s it at?”
Kagome squinted, before pointing, “It’s belly!”
“A’right, Miroku anything but your wind tunnel!” He yelled out and launched himself off the ledge, leaving Kagome and Shippo out of harm’s way. He soared through the air and landed on a tree branch in the general path of the spider. “Looks like you need to be cut down a size.”
Miroku nodded, bound his wrist and pulled his staff from the ground. He headed straight forward as Sango launched her Hiraikotsu at one of the spider’s legs, ripping through the meaty flesh before spinning and coming back to tear off another leg. Miroku tossed a few sutras to the limbs that had been chopped of so that they would be purified and unable to rejoin the main body at the jewel’s command.
Kagome notched an arrow and aimed it at the demon’s head. She released the taught arrow as it sailed through the air near Inuyasha as he waited a split second before swinging the Tetsusaiga to combine the force of the attack.
The spider youkai roared with anger, falling forward onto his chest as three of it’s legs were hacked off. Inuyasha snorted and jumped down from the tree, the spider reared back it’s head, intent on a close attack.
“INUYASHA!” Kagome screamed, though the sounds of her voice was drowned out by the pain that flooded his system a heartbeat later as one of the spider’s fangs pierced his chest clean through. His heartbeat pounded in his ears as he was lifted up into the air away from the tree he’d been in, before being slung off, his body slamming into the trunk of another tree. Paralyzed, all Inuyasha could do was fall through the branches, the ground speeding up to meet his weight.
The battle raged around him as he fought to stay conscious, and it was then he knew the jewel had enhanced the youkai’s venom exponentially. The putrid acid invaded his system at an alarming rate, scaring him far more than he had been when his own brother had ripped through his chest. Panting heavily past the pain that fired throughout his nerves, Inuyasha cried out, his lungs seizing.
No, this wasn’t suppose to happen!
Blurred movement around him caught his attention as he gazed blankly around the splotches floating through his vision.
“Inuyasha!”
The hanyou could barely make out the monk’s voice, followed by the Taijiya.
“Quick! We need to get some of that poison out of him!”
“He’s going out!”
“Inuyasha stay with us!”
This was how he was to die? Not even fighting against Naraku, just a spider youkai who’d been lucky enough to swallow a jewel shard. His breathing had slowed, his lungs tight. If he could have, he would have snorted at the absurdity of the situation.
The voices called out, but the pain had flamed and became too unbearable to stay awake. He felt himself drifting from the voices of his friends into complete darkness, wishing he had been able to see Kagome’s face once more.
-
He came awake with a force, sitting upright, before he could stop his body from doing so, only causing him to put pressure on his abdomen, sending pain shooting through his nerves.
“Shit!” Inuyasha cursed, hand cradling his abdomen gently. He blinked, bringing his vision into focus as he glanced around the room.
“Lay back.” Kagome was by his side immediately, pressing his shoulder down as she watched the gauze start to soak with blood, “You’re reopening your wound.”
“K’gome?” Inuyasha swallowed, letting her push him back onto the old futon. He glanced around, his head throbbing so much he reached up to press his palm to his eye to stop the pounding. “Wha’ happened?”
She sighed, idly running her fingers through his silvery locks that tumbled around him on the futon. Her heart hammered in her chest as she looked over his wounded visage. She steeled her veneer as she turned away, “You almost died.” Kagome went about picking the pestle and mortar up as she crushed more herbs slowly.
Inuyasha lay there quietly for several minutes, trying to regain focus and bearings. He turned his head, his ears laying almost flat to his skull, “Where are we?”
“An old inn,” she glanced at him, glad that he had pulled through, finally, “You’ve been out more than a couple of days. For a while there, we didn’t know if you were going to make it.”
“That spider youkai?” he mumbled, rolling his head back and as he did so pain shot through him, “Shit!”
Kagome hastily set her tools down as she pressed her palm to his forehead, feeling the fever that had barely subsided enough for him to wake, “Shh,” she hushed him calmly before leaning over him and pressing her lips to his cheek, “Don’t strain yourself.”
The hanyou closed his eyes at the gentle comfort, enjoying the feel of her soft lips to his skin. He inhaled, but all he could smell was the rancid scent of the youkai’s venom and antiseptic salve he was sure Kagome had smeared under the dressings over his wound.
“I thought I lost you,” he mumbled, breathing slowly as he reached up to catch her hand.
She chuckled and pressed her cheek to his, “Idiot. You’re the one that nearly died.”
Inuyasha exhaled on a whimper of pain, before he composed himself to speak again past the searing throbbing that erupted along his body, “No… that’s not what I mean,” he brushed his thumb across the back of her palm in a soothing manner, “I thought I would never see your face again.”
Blushing, Kagome sat up and gave him a teary eyed look, her lips trembling in her mix of unsure emotions. Inuyasha watched her before he glanced to there hands as he slowly shifted his hold and twined there fingers together and brought them to his lips.
“Don’t do reckless things. You make me worry,” she hiccupped on a sob that she was holding back for the life of her.
“Keh,” Inuyasha slowly gave her a lopsided fanged grin, which she chuckled as her tears streamed down her face
“Rest.” Kagome patted his shoulder with a teary smile, “You need your strength.”
Inuyasha tightened his hold on her hand, his face sincere, “Stay with me.”
She licked her lips, before she nodded, “Always.”
