The hanyou’s head lifted, furry ears swiveled, listening to a faint sound on the wind. Curious, Inuyasha leapt from the branch he was on to another, chasing the reverberation through the forest with his hypersensitive hearing. The sound grew more distinct the closer he came to it, until he could hear the trickling of the stream not far from where they had camped.
A siren, he thought, hand clasped around the hilt of his Tetsusaiga, before the pitch of the now apparent voice, caused him to pause. The hanyou crouched, clawed hand gripping the bark of the branch he perched upon as his other hand pulled back the foliage.
Below the edge of canopy of trees, the stream than ran close by their camp flowed, and at it’s banks was Kagome. She idly sat by, scrubbing at her foreign clothes to clean something from them, her voice soft and sweet as she sang to herself. Entranced, Inuyasha watched her from afar, his ears swiveled toward her direction. He sat there, stiff and still as a statue, golden gaze watching Kagome as the music of her voice calmed him deep in his soul.
The sound tugged him to a different time, a memory long shoved into a corner of his mind.
“Inuyasha, let me sing you to sleep,” his mother smiled, her gentle hands cradling his small body to her chest. Her voice filled the quiet of the room as she sang him a sweet lullaby.
Snorting, Inuyasha shook his head to dispel the memory that tugged at his heart. Gazing down upon Kagome once more, Inuyasha let go of the foliage and rose to his full height. He turned away and headed back to the camp through the trees, the sound of Kagome’s voice fading as he got farther away.
