Soft sounds of birds, fluttering about and chirping in the trees as morning came slowly, awoke Kagome as the pre-dawn light tossed shadows against the floor. She rubbed the sleep from her eyes as she sat up, yawning and with a force as she stretched out her arms.
Running her hand through her tousled hair, Kagome glanced around the small room, before her eyes fell to the silent figure of Inuyasha at his resting place, his back against the wall, Tetsusaiga held tight to his chest in a fierce grip. She slowly smiled, noticing that the hanyou had dozed off sometime while he had sat up for watch duty. Kagome’s smile turned into a larger grin as she crawled from under the covers and left her place on the futon next to Sango and Shippo.
She crouched in front of the sleeping hanyou, her eyes trailing over his handsome features, his dark ebony hair such a contrast to his regular silvery color. The urge to reach out and run her fingers through it was overpowering, yet she held herself from the task. Kagome shifted next to him, pressing her back against the wall as she gently leaned her head onto his shoulder trying not too apply much pressure as to make him stir awake.
While she sat beside him, the dawn light trailed in from the window, the shadows grew longer, until the light framed them, almost blinding her if she looked up. With her head down, she watched the nails on Inuyasha’s fingers grow to points. Smiling larger she lifted her head, while shielding the sunlight with her arm, Kagome turned to face the hanyou as the light cascaded over him, his ebony hair melded into silvery white.
Kagome giggled, her fingers pressed to her lips as she watched with fascination as the furry dog ears reappeared on the top of his head. They twitched and swiveled toward her as she giggled more. The furry triangles drooped and the hanyou’s head lifted, blinking past the sleepiness clouding his gaze, dark brows softened over golden eyes.
She blushed and lowered her hand to her lap, “You must have been really tired to have fallen asleep on the new moon.”
He shifted to stand, “Keh, it doesn’t happen often.”
She followed suit, standing as she gave another bodily stretch, “Well captain, the new moon has passed so I’m assuming you want to continue our search as quickly as possible?”
Inuyasha didn’t say anything, but his dark brows narrowed slightly as he headed for the door, “You’re in a good mood.”
Kagome nodded and went back to the futon, “I’ll get everyone up and then get breakfast started. We’ll leave as soon as we’re all packed back up.”
He gave a curt nod and exited the room, leaving Kagome to her normal chores. She watched after him, feeling her heart soar, but knowing he probably didn't harbor any emotions for her other than her being his companion. Though it pained her, Kagome found herself smiling to herself anyway, thankful that she could still be beside Inuyasha on their search.
She would have it no other way.
