The impure light shimmered from where the shard was located in his throat, making Kagome whimper in heartache as Sango stood in defense of their group against the attacker - Sango’s brother, Kohaku.

“Say back, this is my fight,” the taijiya unlatched her hiraikotsu from its holding strap.

The boy across the glade, stared blankly at them, his arm raised as he swung the kusarigama over his head in a large arch. Several saimyosho hovered in the area, which made Miroku hiss in aggravation, slipping his prayer beads back along his wrist.

“Aren’t you going to stop her Inuyasha?” Shippo hopped onto his shoulder, whimpering out his fears.

“Keh, she can handle it,” the hanyou gruffed, crossing his arms.

“But we can’t let her kill him,” Kagome said, pressing her tightly bound fist around their collected sacred Shikon jewel fragments to her chest. “His shard is so black. I have to purify it.”

“Kagome’s right,” Miroku said, tightening his hold on his staff. “The poison of a corrupt shard will just cause him more pain.”

Inuyasha shook his head, “Let Sango try and reason with him first. It’s something she needs to do.”

Kohaku released his first attack with his sickle, Sango braced herself with her hiraikotsu, “Kohaku!”

The boy’s blank features held little awareness of his intent to harm his own flesh and blood, the roaring of the corruption from the dark shard filled his head and through the haze that divided him, Naraku’s voice rang true, “Kill them, Kohaku. Kill them.”

“Yes,” he whispered in obedience, as the shadows fell across him from the shade of the trees, his pulled the chain, forcing his sickle to return to his hand. Readying another attack, this time Kohaku would not miss, the jewel shard in his throat darkening more, if possible.
