The clock struck eight as she sat at her kitchen counter, staring into the smiling faces of a family portrait. With a shaky hand she wiped at the tears on her cheeks, not even caring that her makeup was beyond repairable. She ran a finger over the face of her grandfather in the portrait that had been taken at the shrine a year before he had gotten sick.

A knock at her door paused her musings as she laid the frame on the counter, sliding off the chair to go to the front door. Kagome pulled the door open, reveling her best friend Sango standing there. The tall dark haired woman gave a shrug as she held up a six-pack of beer in one hand and a stack of three large pizza boxes in the other.

“Figured you needed company,” Sango nodded towards the apartment, “You gonna let me in or am I going to have to beat you back?”

Kagome blinked before her throat caught on a half sobbing laugh, “Yes and no.” She pulled her friend into a tight hug around the waist, unbalancing her.

“Hey, hey, hey!” Sango said trying to juggle her gifts, staring down at Kagome who held on tightly to her, sobbing into her clothes. She smiled sadly before pressing a kiss to Kagome’s head, “I’m here.”

Sango stood there holding the beer and pizza in the air, “Now let’s get out of the hallway and get down to those horror movies, shall we?”
