The hanyou sat perched on a low hanging branch, relaxing in the afternoon sun as the field was filled with the laughter of children in play. Inuyasha cracked an eye, staring out at the teens scurrying about, chasing one another, Shippo amidst the fun as well. He lightly smiled and crossed his arms over his chest as he nestled down against the trunk of the tree.
“I thought Sango and you went out for the afternoon?” Inuyasha snorted, sensing the monk before he even broke through the cover of foliage below him.
Miroku arrived at the end of the field, eyes finding his brood running about the flowers, before he turned his gaze upward, “Sango decided not to, though I do suspect that the ladies shall be calling us back soon.”
“Dinner?” Inuyasha mumbled, shifting his shoulder against the tree to scratch at an itching spot.
“Yes,” Miroku seated himself among the roots at the base of the tree Inuyasha was occupying, “Though I’m not sure what Sango is teaching Kagome to cook this time.”
The hanyou gave a lazy grin, “She’s good at cooking.”
“You don’t usually tell her that,” Miroku pointed out, raising an accusing brow at the dog demon from the ground.
“Keh,” he snorted, throwing a childish pout, “It’s not like I try to sound mean.”
“But you end up sounding mean all the time,” Miroku laughed, settling himself in a comfortable position so that he could watch his kids wrestle and give chase to Shippo. “They grow up so fast,” he mused, his face showing full well the dues of a parent.
Inuyasha cracked a grin, “Yeah, but you wouldn't have it any other way.”
“Not at all,” Miroku agreed.
They fell into a quiet lull, enjoying the afternoon weather and the children's laughter as it filled the air, the gentle breeze floating through. Inuyasha had just started to close his eyes, intending to get back to his nap that he'd been headed off to earlier, before the kids and Shippo had interrupted when they had burst in the field.
“Inuyasha,” Miroku started hesitantly, causing the hanyou to peek over his arm down at the monk. Miroku didn't make eye contact. “They don't have any grandparents, nor will they have us at some point in their life...”
“What'cha bringing this on about?” Inuyasha slid off the branch and landing on the balls of his feet, crossing his arms in the process as he stared evenly at his friend. “You not planning on leaving your brood and killing over any time soon? I mean, Naraku dead and all...”
“No no no,” Miroku laughed, a sad look to his features. He cleared his throat and started again, glad that Inuyasha stopped his tirade. It hadn't been that long ago, just a few short years since Kagome had returned to this time, yet Inuyasha had finally developed a sense of calmness and more of an attentive nature. It almost made Miroku forget what he was wanting to say.
He just stocked it up to Kagame returning, not the forget the three children Inuyasha had of his own.
With a hint of a smile, betraying his thoughts, Miroku nodded to the field where the kids chased the two tailed kitsune, “I meant to say is that they don't have any other family other than us...” he paused, watching as Inuyasha quietly raised a brow, “But they have you, Inuyasha.”
“What's that suppose to mean?” The hanyou grumbled.
“It means just that. When they are older, Sango and I probably won't be around...” he backtracked again, throwing his hands up, when Inuyasha glared, “much much older... they're kids and grandkids will need someone around, where we can't be.”
After a bit, Inuyasha nodded his head and glanced over to the kids as well, “I can hold that kind of oath to you.”
“Oath?” It was Miroku's turn to raise a brow.
Inuyasha gave a curt whistle, halting the children's play, “Dinner will be done soon!” Miroku watched as Inuyasha corralled the kids, sending them off to get washed up, before the hanyou turned softened eyes on him. “I will vow to watch over your family lineage, until I can no longer do so, and tell them the great tales of their ancestor who was a lecherous monk.”
“Hey!” Miroku shot up, playfully shoving at Inuyasha's arm, “I'll keep you to the oath, just leave out the lecherous part.”
Inuyasha started to head back to the village, tossing a playful grin over his shoulder, “But that's the good part of the story.”
“At least wait til their older,” Miroku sighed, and gathered his staff to follow him.
